MFM 2009
Finally I have some time off to write a post about MFM (Mephit Fur Meet) 2009.

We arrive on thursday night and mingle with the very few furs that have already checked in. We played a little "Who's the werewolf?". I could not quite understand that game, I kept telling them that "I WAS THE WEREWOLF" :p. Little therian joke I guess. No, actually it was a fun game and I enjoyed it but we played like for just half an hour because everyone was tired.

Friday we spent most of the time meeting people. Well, actually it was [info]cassen_grrrl who kept reuniting with all her old fur friends (She could not go to last years' MFM) but it was mostly me being introduced to all her friends and meeting new friends (or should I say mostly hugging and scritching, which is also pretty good). My first order of business was GETTING A TAIL. From confurtiva (first mexican fur con ever held) I was able to make some very nice gold wolf ears (I am a grey werewolf but well, there was no grey fur), so now I needed a tail to match. Fortunately, at the Dealers' den, there was this guy (I promise I will update the post with his name) that, in my humble opinion, had the best tails I've ever seen (at least at MFM 2009). I had to have one of his. The thing was that there was this grey wolf tail which was great but slightly less bushier that I wanted to be, and this golden bushier wolf tail that I fall in love with, specially because it matched more or less the color of my wolf ears. Long story short, and 60 USD later, I had a tail.

And I could not be happier about having a tail. The feeling is mostly like having a real tail. When I bought it, it was mostly to be more in tune to my animal side, the wolf. But after wearing it, I could feel a pressure right on my tailbone like if it was connected. And anything my tail touched (or if someone else touched it by passing by or intentionally :p) I felt it just like a... like a real tail. Every time I had to take my tail away (to sleep unfortunately or to use the computer because the chairs in the rooms are non-tail friendly) I felt I was losing a piece of me.

Well, enough about the tail rant and back to the con, saturday. The fursuiters' parade was great. I fail to remember the number of fursuiters (70-something I think) but I have plenty of photos so I will try to upload one of them on the following week (most likely until next weekend as I will have to work a lot to catch up on everything). After that I had to buy some Titan's jersey a friend of mine wanted and could not find it in Mexico, had some late breakfast and then I was finally back for the Shamanic Shapeshifting conference. I am much into the whole shapeshifting thing because of being a therian wolf, but even so I learned a few things from the conference (or actually I was able to understand some of the things/feelings that I experienced a few years back when experimenting with meditation), but mostly it was quite boring and for the most part, the typical things you hear at werelist or any other old therian group. The concepts of 'I know everything, you are wrong','you are human, deal with it' is what made most groups fail or become so radical that no one wants to ever post anything out of their sets of beliefs because of fear of being attacked. (sorry for any werelist people watching this, that was my experience).

Oh, I was forgetting. One very important thing, that my friend [info]cassen_grrrl  forgot to mention to me before leaving Mexico was the fact that I didn't commission a conbadge. So, at registration we had our regular (just text) conbadges and suddenly, on friday, she went to the dealers' den to pick hers. After a little rant, I commissioned a conbadge to the same guy she commissioned hers [info]dook). I picked the conbadge up today (saturday) and... IT WAS GREAT. It's sooo cool so thanks again dook if you are reading this.

So, right now after posting this, is to go downstairs to the karaoke night and just have some more good time here at MFM. The only thing I am missing is the fact that, at the dealers' den, there are not many furry t-shirts (ok, there are like 6 from the same guy and that's it). I really wanted to buy a lot of wolf/werewolf shirts but well... I guess I can always order them online anyway and pay the shipping/handling to Mexico (quite expensive sometimes, impossible a few times).

Thanks for reading.

*hugs back* It's been quite fun up so far. I am really considering getting a fursuit but I need to save some money for that.

You should come next year. It will be even better in MUCH BETTER place! :3

Sounds like you are having fun. :) This is good! I know what you mean about the shapeshifting panel in general. Most are the same way. That's why I was careful when I ran my spirituality panel at FA United 08- to avoid that trap. But it's hard since some therians like to 'parrot' each other- sometimes I wonder if it's to make themselves look like they are in the know to those around them.. But I say that not to me mean- just that I know there is more difference of opinion on the subject then some would like to mention.

MFM is a great con and if it wasn't for the money I would have taken my fiancee and went. :) Have a safe trip home and I look forward to the pictures if you post them!

Yep. I am really having fun and meeting a lot of people. Wish you could have come to finally meet you IRL. Well, maybe next year.

Yeah, after being member of several therian groups where people were trying to just create their own "religion". It was either you blindly believe what they said or you get kick out of the group after being flamed. I thought, after a few years of groups getting destroyed, people would stop the practice but seems to be it's still part of most therian groups. It's sad because I was really hoping for a good discussion about our animals inside, the way we feel about them and how we want to be one (physically and mentally) with our animal; and not comments about "therianthropy being considered an illness" and anyone thinking otherwise being just fools.

Btw, MFM is changing locations. Next year will be held at the Whispering Woods Hotel & Conference Center (http://www.wwwconferencecenter.com). Way more private, closer to many stores like Walmart or fast-food restaurants and with lots of space.

I'm glad you liked the con. I can't wait until next year! You should add [info]khyle and [info]dook to your friends, and make comments on their posts so they can add you.
However, their journals are Friends Only...

LOL... so, this is a Catch-22 problem, right?

HAHA.. I will add them to my friends list and maybe they will recognize me by my username

Shamanic Shapeshifting at the con
So with the tail, and the ears you are two steps closer to getting a full suit. though one idea (which I shouldn't even know about) that I saw somewhere was that some people get something I don't know the name of but best described as a 'half suit' where a muzzle attaches to the face so the normal eyes and hair shows through, and they have some paws in place of hands; so its like your sort of 'transformed' but you are sill wearing the same clothes.

Er question about that tail you got, it felt real... but wasn't real right, it wasn't taken off some other wolf right : O I remember seeing some person wearing the pelt of a coyote and I thought "no what you are doing, you are supporting the baddies who shot it in the 12 month season across the USA, in trying to connect with it you are getting you peoples shoot and trapped, that is bad!".

My thoughts on shamanism or theiranthropy is that from what I know or can tell, even if you do have the actual pelt of the animal its not going to really make you transform into it or something like http://crescentmoon.deviantart.com/art/Blackwerewolfhero-31560491 so what’s the point? Even if it could be possible and I wanted to I still wouldn't out of principle. Its what’s inside that counts, and is the strongest component for anything we do in life.

Re: Shamanic Shapeshifting at the con
Not a big expert on fursuits, but I think you are right on the half suit, although the head can be either the complete head or just the muzzle. Interesting, I never though of the concept of using a half suit as a way to show that you just transformed, but you are right. I think I might go that way if I decide to do a fur suit.

Haha.. definitely it wasn't a real wolf tail. It was just a very good tail made of fake fur and a material on the inside to keep it close to a 90 angle (like a real one). I said it felt real because it was strapped to me thru my belt and it created a pressure on my tailbone in a way that I felt the tail was really connected to my tailbone. I don't know if that is normal or not (maybe some nerves are stimulated by the pressure, don't know), but it felt quite good.

Definitely I would never kill a fellow wolf just to wear his pelt. For long time I looked for ways to transform (never tried any except maybe a few spells here and there) but after a few years, I understood that I didn't need to change to be in tune with my wolf. That doesn't mean I don't want to change. If that was possible and not risky, I'd love to transform to a werewolf, but right now it has stopped being a obsession.

Re: Shamanic Shapeshifting at the con
Ok, I was pretty sure it wasn't, I am kind of paranoid about that stuff a bunch of people turned evil on me recently (or I realized they were like that) and I thought "oh no, not you too" : o

A blessing that it is fake fur and that it works well for you (along with wolfushusky costume, that not real fur too,.. I think). If it wasn't real to start with it is now. Though for a way to transform I guess you found it until with science, and or maybe some weird event in the future like a phase dimension shift that is speculated at 2012 will have exponential increase in psychic/spiritual power.

My idea with the right way of being a werewolf/therian/furry is the same as being a right human being or any sentient being with free will. Don't do anything horribly bad (like axe murder someone, I am sure you haven't done that either ... I think?). You and many others seem to be doing that, so whatever it is you are doing keep it up : D

Re: Shamanic Shapeshifting at the con
Indeed. I think as long as you don't hurt others and you can function in society, you are ok, no matter if you are a were/therian/furry person. Although, to be honest, being a were/therian is a very lonely and sad path sometimes.

Heya! Didn't know you were at the con, but I'm glad you enjoyed.
mexwerewolf[info]mexwerewolf on September 11th, 2009 02:58 am (UTC)
I was!!!. I really had a very good time there. were you there too?
A Subtle Illusion: cards[info]steviemaxwell on September 11th, 2009 11:59 am (UTC)
Yep, was wearing a brown cap with a big ♣ symbol on the front and wanderered around barepawed for the most of the time. Finished 8th place in the poker tourney as well.
mexwerewolf[info]mexwerewolf on September 11th, 2009 01:42 pm (UTC)
Oh, I remember you. Hehe, I was the one that at each 'Are you a werewolf?' game, thought I was the werewolf because my con-badge had a werewolf on it. My name (mexwerewolf) was a giveaway too :p
A Subtle Illusion: frank[info]steviemaxwell on September 11th, 2009 03:35 pm (UTC)
I didn't stay up long enough to watch or participate in the werewolf games, but I may have passed by you at some point then. Sorry if I didn't make the connection. :)
mexwerewolf[info]mexwerewolf on September 11th, 2009 05:40 pm (UTC)
Don't worry. And yeah, those games were held at midnight. On the last day I came back to the room at 4 AM monday morning. Good thing my plane didn't depart until 2 PM
